KUCHING: Many students including straight-A scorers are choosing careers in music at IMH Academy, according to its press release yesterday. It revealed that these students with a passion for music are confident of better job prospects in the music industry in future, as there are hardly any musically qualified people in the region.

Students who have passed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) with at least credits in English and Grades 7 or 8 in a major instrument, may take the IMH diploma twinning with Australian universities such as University of Southern Queensland, University of Western Australia or James Cook University as well as the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.

Others yet to acquire the required music qualifications may opt to do the foundation year first.

Students who do not have the music qualifications but are already performers in their own fields can apply for the diploma in collaboration with University Malaysia Sabah.

The course is very avant-garde with a broad-based concept of all round education, churning out broad-based individuals with specific music skills.

One may choose to major in teaching, lecturing, performing, composing, conducting, music technology or ethnomusicology.

The course has been specially designed to cater for musicians in the 21st century, specially equipped with IT skills and music technology for the new millennium.

Course lecturers are of Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate levels with instrumental specialists from Russia and United Kingdom available to ensure high standards of performance.

Students may opt not to major in performance with lower expectations required for those in non-performance sectors. They may also choose to combine music with graphic, photography, media, visual arts and complete degrees in media art.

Single subject diplomas are also available for piano, clarinet, violin, drums, guitar, ethnomusicology, early childhood, theory and aural.
